Beating the Hampton Roads Heat: Car AC and Battery Care

A Hampton Roads summer — heat plus humidity — is hard on two things every driver depends on: air conditioning and the battery. Both tend to fail at the worst possible time, and both give you warning signs if you know what to look for. Here's how to stay ahead of them.

Why AC quits in the heat

It's no coincidence that AC fails in the middle of summer — that's when it's working hardest. When the vents blow warm, it's usually low refrigerant from a slow leak, a failing compressor, an electrical issue, or a clogged condenser. The common mistake is grabbing a recharge can from the parts store, which masks a leak for a few weeks and can overcharge the system. A proper fix starts with finding out why it's low, then repairing that.

The humidity factor

Our humidity also loads up the AC system and can breed a musty smell on the evaporator, a common coastal complaint. And remember the same system runs your defroster — so AC problems aren't just a summer comfort issue; you want it working when the windshield fogs on a damp morning too.

Heat is what really kills batteries

Everyone blames winter, but heat does the real damage. High summer temperatures cook a battery internally and shorten its life, so a battery baked through our summers often gives out on the first cool morning — which is why a dead battery seems to strike 'suddenly' in fall. Watch for slow cranking, dimming lights, or needing a jump.

Stay ahead of both

The fix for both is the same: don't wait for a total failure. Have your AC checked if it's not blowing as cold as it used to, and have an older battery tested before it strands you — especially if you can't afford a no-start before a shift or a deployment. Come in and we'll make sure you're ready for the heat.
