How to Pass Your Virginia State Inspection the First Time

Every vehicle registered in Virginia needs an annual safety inspection, and a lot of Chesapeake drivers dread inspection month worried about a surprise failure. It doesn't have to be that way. Here's what the inspection actually covers and how to pass it the first time.

What Virginia's inspection checks

The Virginia State Safety Inspection looks at the systems that keep you and everyone around you safe: brakes, steering and suspension, tires, lights and signals, wipers, horn, mirrors, and the exhaust system. One thing worth knowing — Hampton Roads isn't in Virginia's emissions program (that's Northern Virginia), so here it's purely a safety inspection. Your windshield sticker shows the month it's due.

The most common reasons cars fail here

Around Chesapeake, the usual culprits are worn brakes, tires below the minimum tread, burned-out bulbs, torn wiper blades, and worn steering or suspension parts like ball joints and tie rods. And there's a local one: our coastal salt air corrodes brake and fuel lines, and a rusted, leaking brake line is one of the top failures on higher-mileage vehicles in Hampton Roads.

How to pass the first time

A quick pre-inspection check catches most of these before they cost you a rejection sticker. Walk around and test your lights, look at your wiper blades, check tire tread, and pay attention to any brake noise or a soft pedal. Better yet, have a shop give it a once-over ahead of time — small fixes now beat a failed inspection later.

Fail? Fix it in one visit

The advantage of getting inspected at a full-service shop is that if something doesn't pass, you're already in the right place to fix it and re-inspect the same day — no running to a second shop or paying another inspection fee. Come see us and beat the end-of-month rush.
